⚘ How This Website Started ⚘

Hi Plant and Flower People!

I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.

I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.

It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.

If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!

Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!

Parlour Palm Plant Care
How To Water

In lower to medium light, you should water when the potting soil has dried about three-fourths the depth of the soil. Always test for moisture before you water, using a moisture meter for houseplants can help you water properly. In bright light, water your Parlor Palm plant when the potting soil has dried down to about one-half the depth of the grow pot. You can keep soil a bit more moist in spring and summer, allowing to dry a bit more during winter months. Remove excess standing water.

Most palm plants, and houseplants in general, do not like to have constantly wet roots. Avoid purchasing plants that have been potted into containers without drainage holes and do not directly pot them into a container without drainage holes. This will help avert the soggy soil and roots that will eventually kill many house plants.

Keep your Parlour palm plant in a grow pot with drainage holes and buy a decorative container, without drainage holes, a few inches larger in diameter and set your plant inside of the decorative pot. This makes it easier to remove excess water, keeps your plants healthier, and will also keep water from getting on your floors.

Other Care Tips

Every palm plant and its environment are unique. Remember this when caring for your houseplants. You need to take into consideration the lighting and local environment the plant is placed in as you make decisions about watering. Temperatures for Parlour palm plants should be at a minimum of 50 ° F.

Bright, filtered light is best for most palm plants but the Kentia and Neanthe Bella palm can usually be maintained in lower light situations. The Rhapis Palm plant is also an option for lower light.

Try to place your palm houseplants in the best lighting available since lower light levels generally means less foliage and a thinner, less healthy plant overall. Low light levels will also mean watering less frequently for any plant. Palms should tolerate some early morning sun but avoid hot afternoon sun.

Remove lower leaves as they yellow and trim brown tips as needed. It is normal for a new plant to shed its old foliage when it is moved to a new and different environment. Expect this of new additions to your home. Just don't make the mistake of assuming that if your Palm is losing foliage or turning a bit yellow, it must need more water! Given the proper care, watering and lighting, it should acclimate and become a beautiful, trouble free plant.

Initially keep an eye out for insect problems. Palms of all types are susceptible to insects. Spider mites are a common problem with Chamaedorea palms. I will say that palms seem to be insect prone in general. Keeping the foliage clean will help to discourage insect problems.

Any plant can have insect infestations. Insects are more attracted to certain plants and palm plants are one of those. It is best to be vigilant in checking for any thing that might indicate insects are present. Make cleaning the foliage of your Palm plant part of your regular plant care. Using a spray bottle full of water with a few drops of mild dish detergent added is a great way to help prevent any problems from starting up. Or give your Palm a gentle shower. Always clean the bottom of the foliage in addition to the top.

It is a good idea to quarantine any new additions to your house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange Essential oil to my houseplant cleaning solution.

Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your houseplants should be a regular part of your houseplant care.

Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location. Hope this has been helpful to you as you care for your indoor plants and flowers! More houseplant care information below...
