Philodendron plant has been in use as an indoor plant since Victorian times and is still a popular houseplant today. I have included it on my best houseplants list because of its tolerance of lower light and ease of care.
While there are many different types of Philodendron, the most commonly seen and used indoors is the Heart Leaf Philodendron. Other names for the Heart Leaf Philodendron are Sweetheart Vine, Heart Leaf Ivy or Philodendron Cordatum. This Philodendron has heart-shaped, green leaves that are typically about 2-3 inches across although they will grow much larger outdoors. A trailing or a climbing plant, this Philodendron is the one most often used as an interior houseplant.
Heart Leaf Philodendron is one of the vining, climbing types of philodendron and is ideally used as a hanging plant or table plant. Its small size also make Heart Leaf Philodendron perfect for planting in dishgardens or terrariums.
Heart Leaf Philodendron will do best if placed in indirect light. Keep out of direct sun, bright diffused light is preferable. Most philodendrons will survive in lower light but, as with most other plants, will becomes leggy under lower light conditions. Additional light from a fluorescent light is suitable if available.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from people about their personal house plants and how to keep their own indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn how to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on!
Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.
If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!
Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!
Good lighting and proper watering are most important for your Heart Leaf Philodendron house plant's health and this is some of the information I will refer you to when you send an email.
Heart Leaf Philodendron should be let to dry down almost completely in low to medium light but not to point of wilting. In bright light, allow soil to dry down at least 1/2 to 3/4 of its depth. Please see the sections on watering indoor house plants and lighting for your indoor house plants, as these most affect your houseplants health and growth.
Keep Heart Leaf Philodendron at temperatures between 65°F and 80°F. Average home temperatures suit it well. While it will do well in normal home conditions, Heart Leaf Philodendron will benefit from having additional humidity. You can provide extra humidity by placing on humidity trays or grouping with other houseplants.
Heart Leaf Philodendron plant will do best if placed in indirect light. Keep out of direct sun, bright diffused light is preferable. Most philodendrons will survive in lower light but, as with most other plants, will becomes leggy under lower light conditions. Additional light from a fluorescent light is suitable if available.
Heart Leaf Philodendron is a trailing plant but can develop aerial roots and attach itself to wood, walls etc. and climb. This is most likely if there is an abundance of humidity in the air. It is a fairly fast growing house plant if cared for correctly.
To keep your Heart Leaf Philodendron full, place in bright, indirect light and cut back the longest of its vines occasionally to encourage new growth. Remove any leaves that become discolored or faded. If you are watering properly and the light is good, you should get some side shoots to fill the plant out.

It is a good idea to quarantine any new additions to your indoor house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your house plants should be a regular part of your house plant care.
If you like the Heart Leaf Philodendron but would like a little more colorful plant, you might like a Philodendron 'Silver' or the Philodendron 'Brasil' or 'Brazil'. Philodendron 'Silver' is very similar to the Heart Leaf Philodendron but with silver markings and the Philodendron 'Brasil' has yellow variegation on the green leaves. Both are very easy and pretty indoor house plants. The house plant care, watering and lighting for 'Brasil' and 'Silver' is the same as for the Heart Leaf Philodendron.
