Syngonium podophyllum plant is native to tropical Central and South America and is also known as Nephthytis. Other common names for the Syngonium houseplant are Arrowhead plants, Elephant Ear plants, Butterfly plants and Goosefoot plants.
Syngonium podophyllum is an easy plant to care for and is a climbing or trailing type of plant. The leaves are usually green and white or some close variation but can be red colored or even almost all white. One of the lesser seen types has pink leaves and it is a very attractive houseplant.
If kept in a moist, humid environment Syngonium houseplant may produce aerial roots and these roots may attach to surfaces much like a Pothos or Philodendron Cordatum. You can place these stems and roots in the soil and make a nice ground cover in a larger pot or terrarium. Use Syngonium in a terrarium, as a table plant, hanging plant or a climbing plant.

Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.
If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!
Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!
The soil of your Syngonium house plant can be kept somewhat moist allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry, especially during spring and summer. There should be a reduction in watering your Syngonium plant during fall and winter months, allowing the soil to almost dry. Do not allow to dry completely but also avoid constantly soggy soil. See sections on watering your indoor house plants and indoor houseplant lighting for further information that will benefit your houseplant's health.
Bright light and high humidity will be beneficial to Syngonium plant. It will become thin, weak and leggy in low light so a spot next to a window with bright, indirect light is ideal. Some morning sun is okay but keep out of hot, afternoon sun.
Temperatures for Syngonium should be kept above 60°F. The Syngonium is not a plant to expose to cold temperatures.
Regular showers with room temperature water are great for Syngonium, helping to discourage insects. Water evaporates quickly from the leaves of plants so it is not very effective as a way to increase humidity in the long term.

A new plant can be somewhat prone to insect problems. I have seen Syngonium with mites, mealybugs and thrips. Purchase healthy, insect free plants to avoid these pesky problems. Always inspect plant roots and foliage before you buy. Distorted foliage, spots or holes in leaves, brown soggy roots should all be avoided when purchasing a new indoor house plant.
To keep your Syngonium houseplant happy and pest free, use a spray bottle to wash down weekly with water, making sure to hit the underside of the leaves. This will discourage insects and help keep your Syngonium plants leaves free of dust.
It is a good idea to quarantine any new additions to your indoor house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects or diseases that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent to remove and discourage any insects. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your houseplants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your houseplants should be a regular part of your house plant care.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location. Hope this has been helpful to you as you care for your Syngonium plant and all of indoor house plants and flowers! More plant and flower pictures and care information below...
