Referred to as Corn Plant by some people, a few of the Dracaena plants do resemble corn. The Dracaena Fragrans and Janet Craig look the most like corn plants. Plant care is very similar for most of the Dracaena plants. That includes Massangeana, Warneckii, "Art Carmen", and the graceful Marginata plant.
The Dracaena "Art Carmen" is a popular interior landscape plant. Many of the plants that are used by interior landscape companies are Dracaena plants. Dracaena plants do well in the artificial lighting available in many office settings. Can be grown in low light but medium to bright, indirect light is better for plant health and growth.
A member of the Dracaena family, "Art Carmen" is one of the more common Dracaena found in homes and interior landscapes. Dracaena "Art Carmen" is grown in a variety of forms including the tip, bush and cane. This glossy, dark green plant can be anywhere from one foot tall to twenty feet tall, though it is unusual to find them at that size except in interior landscapes or the tropical forest.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from customers about their personal houseplants. It is nice helping them keep their indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn how to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on!
Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.
If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!
Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!
Other common Dracaena houseplants you are likely to find at your local home improvement store or garden center are the Dracaena Marginata, Dracaena Warneckii and the Massangeana. All of these make great additions to any home or office space and require minimal care.
Each plant and its environment are unique. Remember this when caring for any of your houseplants. When watering any indoor plant you need to take into consideration the lighting and local environment in which the plant is placed. In the right lighting and with proper watering the "Art Carmen" is a beautiful easy care house plant.
With a 10" diameter pot or larger, it is a good idea to check the soil with a houseplant moisture meter before you water. In lower to medium light, let dry down at least 3/4 the depth of the grow pot. In bright light let the potting media dry down about the same amount. See pages on watering your indoor plants and lighting for your plants for more information.
Leaf tips that are yellow may indicate over-watering problems. Pale new growth with dying tips, rotting roots and stems, soggy growing media are all signs that you are over-watering Dracaena "Art Carmen". This is not always reversible so keep this plant more to the dry side. Please do not take that to extremes either!

Dracaena "Art Carmen" does best in a medium to bright light situation. Keep your Dracaena in bright, filtered light if available. Direct afternoon sun is not recommended but some early morning sun can help keep your Corn plant full and growing.
Dracaena "Art Carmen" is often described as a low light plant. I would never recommend putting any houseplant in very low light unless you have no other option. Any plant in extremely low light will become weak, leggy and unattractive over time. Adding some artificial grow lighting in very low light is a good idea.
With the right care, Dracaena "Art Carmen" can be maintained in low lighting. However, it is more prone to root rot if over-watered in lower light so you will need to be very careful not to over-water.
Remove lower and inner leaves as they yellow. Brown tips and leaf margins should be trimmed with sharp, clean scissors to the natural leaf shape. It is normal for a new plant to shed some of its old foliage when it is moved to a new and different environment. You can expect this to some degree with any new plant. Given the proper care, it should acclimate and become a beautiful, trouble free indoor plant.
"Art Carmen" is affected by excessive soluble salts (fertilizers) and fluoride, which may be present in your water. Symptoms are yellow blotches on the foliage, brown tips and leaf margins. You can help remedy this by leaching the soil and replacing old soil with fresh growing media every year.
Keep your "Art Carmen" plant's foliage clean and initially keep an eye out for insect problems. Mites, mealybug, thrips and scale can sometimes be a problem but a good wash down with soapy water should be sufficient to control these pests. Just make sure you treat as soon as you notice a problem as they can and will damage your plant.

It is a good idea to quarantine any new additions to your house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange Essential oil to my houseplant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your houseplants should be a regular part of your houseplant care.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location. Hope this has been helpful to you as you care for your indoor plants and flowers! More houseplant care information below...
