Nephthytis plant is native to tropical Central and South America and is also known as Syngonium podophyllum. Other common names are Arrowhead plant, Elephant Ear plant, Butterfly plant and Goosefoot plant. Please use picture for identification as all those names can be confusing. Common names for indoor house plants often vary depending on the area in which you live.
If kept in a moist, humid environment Nephthytis will produce aerial roots and will attach to surfaces or will root in the soil resulting in a nice ground cover. I had some growing in an indoor container that was about 3 feet by 6 feet and the Nephthytis quickly filled in the entire container. It looked great and was easy to care for. Use it in a terrarium, as a table plant, hanging plant or a climbing plant.
Nephthytis is an easy house plant to care for and grow as long as it is placed in a bright light situation. It will tolerate lower light levels with reduced watering frequency. For the best results, bright, indirect light is best.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from people about their personal house plants and how to keep their own indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on!
Over the years, I have had many animals and plants in the same house and have not had too many problems. I always make my best effort to keep houseplants out of the reach of pets. That can be difficult, especially with cats, as they seem to be able to get just about anywhere they please! Being an animal lover, as many people are, I thought it would be helpful to add a link for those with questions about pets and houseplants, as I have received a few emails with questions on the subject. Do not allow pets to eat your indoor houseplants or your outdoor plants. Questions about plants and pet safety?

The soil can be kept somewhat moist, especially during spring and summer, allowing the potting media to dry about 1/2 its depth. You can reduce watering your Nephthytis during fall and winter months, allowing the soil to almost dry. Do not allow to dry completely but also avoid constantly soggy soil. See sections on watering your indoor house plants and indoor house plant lighting for further information that will benefit your house plants health.
Bright light and high humidity will be beneficial. Nephthytis house plants will become thin, weak and leggy in low light. A spot next to a window with bright, indirect light is ideal. Some morning sun is okay but keep out of hot, afternoon sun. Regular showers with room temperature water are great for Nephthytis, helping to increase humidity and discourage insects.
Temperatures for Nephthytis should be kept above 60°F. It is not a plant to expose to cold temperatures.
A new plant can be somewhat prone to insect problems. I have seen Nephthytis with mites, mealybugs and thrips. Purchase healthy, insect free plants to avoid these pesky problems. Always inspect plant roots and foliage before you buy. Distorted foliage, spots or holes in leaves, brown soggy roots should all be avoided. To keep your Nephthytis happy and pest free, use a spray bottle to wash down weekly with water. This will discourage insects and provide humidity.
You might want to consider quarantining any new additions to your indoor house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your house plants should be a regular part of your house plant care.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location.
