Care for English Ivy Plant

English Ivy is an indoor or outdoor plant. Requiring little care if given the right conditions, English Ivy prefers bright, indirect light, cooler temperatures and some humidity. English Ivy will tolerate very cold temperatures or an outdoor sunny or shady location if "hardened off" first.
English Ivy is often seen growing outside on the side of houses or on a fence. English Ivy will take temperatures below freezing. I have some planted in a clay pot outside my front door and it has survived snow, ice and drought without much attention. Much easier to grow outside than inside your home, English Ivy can be kept inside with some bright light, attention, and care.
English Ivy is a house plant that will do well as a hanging plant, table plant or a climbing house plant. You may want to use it in a dish garden as an accent for other plants that love a humid environment.
English Ivy tends to be more difficult when you first bring it home, especially if it is a young plant with a poor root system. Remove it from its grow pot before purchasing to make sure the roots are healthy and well established. Also check the backs of the leaves for any sign of insect problems as they often have spider mites.

How To Water
In low to medium light, allow English ivy to dry completely before watering thoroughly. If kept in a bright light situation, you can a water thoroughly when the potting media has dried at least one-half of the way down. Other Care Tips
English Ivy comes in a variety of shapes, sizes and variegation. Some are virtually triangular in shape, some are three-lobed, some are five-lobed. The Needlepoint Ivy has long pointed lobes and is nearly star shaped. Which ever variety you choose, provide proper light and water and mist or wash down when possible to avoid mite problems and raise the moisture level.

Indoors you should provide the brightest light you have available. It will acclimate to lower light if you treat it carefully and if you start with a good healthy plant with a good root system. If buying a new English Ivy plant, remove from the pot and make sure it has a good root system. Roots should almost fill the pot.
English Ivy will take cool temperatures. Also, it is helpful to mist the leaves often, both for humidity and to discourage spider mites which seem to really love English Ivy, especially indoors. Cutting back the longest runners occasionally will encourage new growth as will pinching back new growth tips.
One of the biggest problems you may have with English Ivy is spider mites. The easiest way to avoid spider mite problems is to give your English Ivy a good shower once a week, washing both tops and bottoms of leaves. This will wash off any pests and their eggs, clean the plant and raise the moisture level. Spider mites thrive in hot, dry conditions so if your plant is in a hot, dry, sunny spot, keep an eye out. Spider mites reproduce at an amazing rate that increases as the temperature increases.
You should quarantine any new additions to your indoor house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your house plants should be a regular part of your house plant care.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location.
