Over the years, I have had many animals and plants in the same house and have not had too many problems. I always make my best effort to keep houseplants out of the reach of pets. That can be difficult, especially with cats, as they seem to be able to get just about anywhere they please! Being an animal lover, as many people are, I thought it would be helpful to add a link for those with questions about pets and houseplants, as I have received a few emails with questions on the subject. Do not allow pets to eat your indoor houseplants or your outdoor plants. Questions about plants and pet safety?

Keep Anthurium somewhat moist. May need to be watered more frequently than other plants, especially during the spring and summer. During fall and winter allow topsoil to just become dry before watering. Please see section on watering and the section on lighting for more information. Proper watering and light are essential for house plant health.
Locate your Anthurium plant in bright, indirect lighting. Temperatures should be kept between 60°F and 80°F. Humidity needs to be kept as high as possible. You can place your Anthurium house plant on humidity tray, surround with constantly moist Spanish or green moss. Placing Anthurium with other plants will increase humidity levels as will placing in a naturally humid room.
Trim the leaf margins if they become brown, following the original shape of the leaf. If you have to trim the leaves frequently, your Anthurium house plant's humidity levels may be need to be increased. You should also review your watering habits. Keeping the planting media too wet or dry can cause browning of the leaf tips and edges. Also Anthuriums tend to collapse quickly when they become dry. That is a signal to increase your watering.
Anthuriums are prone to mite problems so also check the underside of the leaf if you are having trouble with browning leaf margins to be sure this is not the problem. Wiping the leaves and stems, front and back, with a damp sponge or cloth will keep it clean and minimize any pests. Giving the foliage a good shower will also be beneficial in removing mites and their eggs.
It is a good idea to quarantine any new additions to your indoor house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your houseplants should be a regular part of your houseplant care.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location. Hope this has been helpful to you as you care for your indoor plants and flowers! More houseplant care information below...
