Care for Hoya indoor plant. The Hoya carnosa is an easy indoor house plant, requiring little attention other than watering when needed and an occasional pruning. Hoya carnosa is known by the common name of Wax Plant and, aside from being an attractive vining plant, may reward you with very fragrant flowers during summer or fall.
Hoya plants have thick leaves and may be either all green or variegated with white, pale green and sometimes hints of pink or red. All green Hoya plant is shown here with picture of variegated leaves lower in this page.
The Hoya is self-branching and, with adequate light, will produce clusters of very fragrant flowers during the summer or fall. Picture of flower cluster on indoor Hoya house plant is shown here. Your Hoya houseplant will not always have flowers so use foliage as an identifier.
The most popular type of Hoya is Hoya carnosa and it is the most common type of Hoya houseplant. You can use the Hoya plant as a table or shelf plant, as a hanging plant or grow with a trellis or other form of support for a climbing plant.
I have a number of Hoya carnosa plants in my interior landscape accounts, most of them in 6 inch diameter grow pots and a few in 8 inch grow pots. Some are in partial sun near windows, some are farther from windows and receive both natural light and artificial light, and some are growing under primarily fluorescent lighting. The best growth is with those plants very near a window but all of them are relatively problem free as long as I water wisely based on the light in which they are placed.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from people about their personal house plants and how to keep their own indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn how to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on!
Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.
If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!
Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!
If you place your Hoya plant in high light, you can allow the potting mix to dry down 1/2 to 3/4 of the way out before watering thoroughly. In a lower light situation, allow soil to dry almost completely between waterings. Please read the section on watering for more on the most important part of your indoor house plant's care.
You Hoya plant will do best in or near a window. Provide very bright, indirect light. Some sun is okay as long as it is not hot afternoon sun, especially through a pane of glass. Direct sun through glass can damage the foliage of any indoor house plant.
Ideal temperatures for your Hoya houseplant are a low of 50 degrees F. at night and a high of 65 - 70 degrees F. during the day. However, your Hoya house plant should do fine with the average temperatures found at home or in the office.
You may notice that your Hoya house plants has vines that do not have any leaves. These are the flowers spurs and this is where the plant will produce flowers if kept in optimum light. These should not be removed if you want your Hoya to flower.
Keep your Hoya house plant in a small pot as it will be more likely flower if almost root bound. I also find that I have much less problems with roots or over watering when any of my plants are in the smallest nursery pots that they grow well in. I have many plants that have been in the same nursery pots for ten or more years and they do quite well. One mistake people often make when they get a new plant is to pot into an extra large pot. That is never a good idea with indoor plants.

You can prune back long vines occasionally as this can help promote some new growth. Always keep any leaves that yellow or turn brown removed.
Hoya plants do well as hanging plants or provide a trellis of some type for your plant to climb. You can also just place your plant on a table or shelf and allow to trail down.
There are a few problems you may encounter with your Hoya plant. If your Hoya plant is not in adequate light, it will not flower. The light your plant receives is the biggest factor in determining the watering of your indoor plants and, of course, the growth and flowering of your indoor Hoya house plants.
Although Hoya plants are one houseplant that has tends to have few problems with insects, I do sometimes have problems with mealybugs. An oval shaped, somewhat flattened body and six legs distinguish this insect, although they can appear to have more legs because of their "antennae" and "tails". They also have a fringe around the body. A waxy, protective substance covers the body of adults and egg sacs giving them a cottony appearance. Here is a picture of mealy bugs.
Normally mealy bugs are found in hidden areas, on the undersides of the leaves or in leaf axils. They also excrete a sticky substance called honeydew. Keep a watchful eye out for this pest, especially when you first bring a new plant home. Clean off any that you find immediately with soapy water.
Quarantining any new additions to your indoor house plant family for a few weeks is always a good idea. This helps to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new indoor house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Never apply anything to your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water your house plant first, move to a shady location and then clean. It is a good idea to make cleaning your plant part of your regular house plant care. I hope this houseplant information has been helpful in the care of your Hoya plant and that all of your flowers and plants are healthy and growing.
