How to care for Kalanchoe flowering houseplant. Tropical flowering plants are often used in interior landscapes to add a touch of color. Bromeliads, Mums, Begonias and Kalanchoes are most commonly used. They are removed after losing their blooms and replaced with new plants that are in an early bloom stage. Bromeliad plants have the longest lasting color while Kalanchoe and Begonia come in second place. Mums will not last long at all indoors, at least not in the average home.
The Kalanchoe plant is a pretty plant with thick leaves. It is a succulent plant and the type most often offered in retail stores for use as a houseplant is Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana is generally sold in the supermarket, home improvement store, and other stores while it is in flower and is used as a gift plant or placed together with other plants as an arrangement.
Succulents are generally easy to care for plants. They need fast draining growing media, very good light, including some sunlight, good air circulation, and proper watering. They need a cool, dry environment in the winter to bloom the following season.
Kalanchoes are grown as foliage plants and as flowering houseplants. Growers keep a steady supply of blooming Kalanchoe plants in production and they should be available throughout the year at your local nursery or other plant retailer.
Although the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana seems to be the most common in the United States, I did have a person email me from Germany with a picture of a houseplant she had owned for a number of years. She had purchased at a local store but was not sure what type of plant it was and asked if I could identify. I had not seen this particular plant before but it looked familiar. It was eventually found to be Kalanchoe manginii, a variety often sold in Europe. The Kalanchoe manginii has thick leaves but they are longer, narrower leaves than Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. The flowers on Kalanchoe manginii are larger, bell-like flowers as compared to the small, upright flower clusters on K. blossfeldiana.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from people about their personal houseplants and how to keep their own indoor houseplants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn how to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on for more about Kalanchoe houseplant and Kalanchoe care!
Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.
If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!
Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!
There are a few other types of Kalanchoe that I have used in small, succulent dishgardens. They are the Kalanchoe tomentosa (also called Panda Plant, has brown edges on leaves and a furry leaf surface) and the Kalanchoe beharensis (also called Felt Plant or Velvet Leaf, a triangular shaped leaf with brown hair). Both of these plants have "hairy" leaves, making them easy to distinguish from the Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, which does not have "hairy" leaves. The blossfeldiana has shiny, somewhat oval leaves with a toothed or scalloped edge. Flowers on Kalanchoe blossfeldiana may be white, red, orange, pink, or yellow.
How to water your Kalanchoe houseplant. You should check houseplants to see if they need to be watered once a week. You will have more success if you check your plants on the same day each week as this makes it less likely you will forget to water your plants or just pour water in when ever you think about it. Neither one is good for houseplants.
During spring and summer, allow the soil of your Kalanchoe to dry about 1/4 to 1/2 of its depth and then water thoroughly. Do not allow to stand in water, discard any excess after watering. During fall and winter, you can allow the soil to dry a little more. Be sure your Kalanchoe is planted in a pot with drainage holes in the bottom to avoid problems with overly wet soil.
Please see section on watering your indoor plants and lighting for your indoor plants for more information on the two most important parts of houseplant care. The water your plant needs is very relative to the available light.
You can keep your Kalanchoe plant in average home temperatures. The minimum temperature should be not much lower than 50° Farenheit.
Place your Kalanchoe in the best light you can provide, especially while it has flowers. A brightly lit spot in a window would be best. I have kept Kalanchoe plants out on the patio in a mostly shaded spot in spring and summer and that worked out well. The plant stayed in flower for much longer than it would have inside the house. Exposure to direct sunlight may cause the leaves to take on a reddish tinge.

Perform basic plant grooming when you check your Kalanchoe for water needs. Remove and discard any leaves that have started to yellow or brown. Pinch back any flowers that have started to decline. Turn the plant a half turn to keep flowers and foliage evenly exposed to good light. This keeps the plant from growing too much in one direction.
While I have not seen many insect problems with Kalanchoe, they can have pests just like any other plant. Mealy bug would be the most likely but keep any eye out for any pest problems and address immediately if you notice any. Mites, mealy bug, thrips, and scale are all possible problems.
It is best to quarantine any new additions to your houseplant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new houseplant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my houseplant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your houseplants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your houseplant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your houseplants should be a regular part of your houseplant care. Do not wet plants that have hairy or furry leaves.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location. Hope this has been helpful to you in your care of your Kalanchoe houseplant. More plant and flower pictures, plant care, and contact information below...
