In the interior landscape business, only the strong survive. It is true of the tropical plants as well as the people. Certain plants tend to be found in the commercial interior landscape because time weeds out the weaker plants. Most in the indoor plant care business have learned from experience which indoor tropical plants you want to use for longevity. The Aglaonema plant is one of those, including the Aglaonema "Golden Bay".
Since the cost of plant replacements usually falls on the plant service company, we want to use indoor tropical plants that have proven themselves to be hardy, attractive and long-lived. Many Aglaonema plants fall into this category and the "Golden Bay" and "Silver Bay" are Aglaonema varieties that make the grade!
The Aglaonema "Golden Bay" is often used in interior landscapes. The Aglaonema plant is more commonly called, the Chinese Evergreen plant. Aglaonema "Golden Bay" is easy to care for and can be maintained at the lower light levels often found in the home or office environment.
There are many Aglaonema varieties and new types of Aglaonema plant are introduced quite frequently. Sometimes these new varieties are healthy and robust and sometimes they develop problems and production is ended.
The more usual Aglaonema varieties are the Aglaonema "Emerald Beauty" or "Maria", "Silver Queen" and the Aglaonema "Silver Bay". They have a bush-like or clumping growth and, depending on the pot size, can be from 8" to 4' in height.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from people about their personal house plants and how to keep their own indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn how to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on!
Hi Plant and Flower People!
I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.
I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.
It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.
If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!
Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!
Almost all Aglaonema varieties are variegated to some extent. Keep in mind that the variegated plants usually need more light than those with less variegation. Typically, the lighter the color of a plant, the higher the light levels it needs to maintain its color and variegation. In other words, the light your Aglaonema plant receives, or doesn't receive, has an effect on the way your plant looks.
An Aglaonema Golden Bay in high light can be allowed to have the potting mix to dry 1/2 to 3/4 of the way out before watering thoroughly. In a lower light situation, you can allow soil to dry almost completely. Please read the section on watering for more on the most important part of your plant care.
The Aglaonema "Golden Bay" is a great indoor plant for just about any location except full sun. Full sun, especially through glass, can burn or scorch the exposed leaves. This plant will survive in low light but for a nice looking plant, try to provide bright, diffused natural light or some artificial fluorescent light. It is ideal for use in professional office space as it is attractive, easy care and can survive under artificial lighting.
Aglaonema "Golden Bay" is not a cold tolerant plant and temperatures should be kept above 60 degrees F. The temperatures inside the average home should be suitable for your Aglaonema "Golden Bay". Air should be kept as humid as possible.
It is a good idea to cut back a few of the tallest stems of your Aglaonema plant as your plant ages. This will promote new growth at the base of the plant and help to keep your Aglaonema plant fuller. You can cut back to a few inches above the soil level, leaving a few leaf nodes to start new growth.
Mealy bugs are one of the most common insect problems that you will have with Chinese evergreen. An oval shaped, somewhat flattened body and six legs distinguish this insect, although they can appear to have more legs because of their "antennae" and "tails". They also have a fringe around the body.

A waxy, protective substance covers the body of adults and egg sacs giving them a cottony appearance. They normally are found in hidden areas, undersides of the leaves or in leaf axils. They also excrete a sticky substance called honeydew. Keep a watchful eye out for these pest, especially when you first bring a new plant home. Here is a picture of mealy bugs.
It is best to quarantine any new additions to your house plant family for a few weeks just to be sure there are not any insects that were not noticed at first. Wash down your new house plant with a mixture of water and mild dish detergent. I like to add a few drops of Eucalyptus essential oil or Orange essential oil to my house plant cleaning solution.
Apply to top and lower leaf and stem surfaces of your house plants, being careful not to saturate the soil. You can clean by hand or use a spray bottle to apply your house plant cleaning solution. I use a sponge moistened with my cleaning solution to gently wipe the top and lower leaf surfaces. Cleaning of your house plants should be a regular part of your house plant care.
Never apply anything to the foliage of your plant while it is in the sun or when the soil is dry. Water first and move to a shady location. Hope this has been helpful to you in your care of your Aglaonema Golden Bay plant. Hope all of your plants and flowers are healthy, green, and growing.
