Plant Care for Bromeliad
Houseplants & Flowers

Perhaps you are looking for a plant to use in your home or office that offers a little color to brighten up your interior space. One of a few types of bromeliad plants would be a good choice for some added color and most bromeliads are easy care plants. Interior landscape companies often use bromeliad plants to add something extra to an interior plant design.

Care for Bromeliad - House Plants Flowers

Guzmania Bromeliad House Plant

A few important things I have learned about caring for interior landscape plants are that providing good care for your plants and flowers requires attending to them on a regular schedule and that choosing plants that are well suited for growing indoors makes a world of difference. Buying an indoor plant just because you like the way it looks is not the best way to choose a plant. Be sure you know what you are getting first.

Starting with a healthy plant, one with a good root system and healthy stems and foliage, will also make it much easier to keep your plant healthy and growing. Checking the entire plant before you bring it home to be reasonably sure that it is free of disease or insects can help insure that you have a good looking, healthy plant in the future.

Working in the interior landscape industry, I get a lot of questions from customers about their personal houseplants. It is nice helping them keep their indoor house plants growing and healthy. That is why I started this website, to help others learn how to care for their indoor plants and flowers. So please read on!

⚘ How This Website Started ⚘

Hi Plant and Flower People!

I started this website in 2012 while helping my younger brother through a fight with terminal cancer. Between shopping, cleaning, cooking, laundry, doctor/hospital visits, and other tasks to help him, I taught myself HTML/CSS and other skills used in creating a website. My brother had a very successful stock photography website himself and his advice to me was to make a website about something you know.

I had left a job in the interior landscape industry in 2012 (I have worked in the interior landscape industry since 1986) to go across the country to help him out. So that became the subject of this website, indoor house plant and flower care.

It costs money for hosting service, domain fees, etc. to keep websites running. That is why I have third party ads/Amazon products and other affiliate links on webpages. Please use them if they are helpful to you as I earn commissions/ad revenue through them and they help pay costs for hosting, domain name, etc.

If you need some help with the general care of your indoor plants and flowers, read about basic houseplant care. You can also email houseplant care questions or requests for help identifying your mysterious indoor plant!

Please also consider supporting this website with a donation, if you can. Any help is appreciated. Hope you find some helpful information here. Thank you and read on Plant People!

Easy to care for, bromeliad plants have a colorful, long lasting bloom. The ease of care and long lasting flower got them a spot on my list of best house plants. Guzmania is the most popular because they are available in many colors. Guzmania are also the bromeliad you will easily find at just about any store that sells indoor potted plants.

Bromeliads should be acquired with an established bloom as they really require a greenhouse environment to reach this stage. If you have a sunroom or a greenhouse you can have fun growing and propagating these beautiful tropical plants.

Bromeliad House Plant Care
Watering

Bromeliad plants have a minimal root system so you need to be sure you do not keep too wet. If your bromeliad is new, resist the temptation to pot into a larger pot. Keep it in a small container. Allow potted bromeliads soil to dry, then water lightly and repeat. A bromeliad in a higher light placement should be allowed to dry down at least one half the depth of the grow pot and then it can be watered thoroughly. Discard excess standing water.

Other things to note about watering your bromeliad. Watering in the "vase" of the plant is fine in good, bright light situations. However, if the lighting is not great, you might end up with other problems. Gnats, mosquitoes and rot can become problems. In nature, rain falls into the center of the bromeliad plant, remaining there until it evaporates. Insects and organic matter fall in and are trapped in the vase. As the insects and organic matter decompose, the plant is fed through the foliage. This process will most likely not be occurring in your home! I have also had a bromeliad with a vase full of water knocked over, causing quite a mess so consider where your bromeliad is placed before watering in the vase.

Medium to bright light is essential for keeping the plant and the bloom looking good for a long period of time. Bromeliads will decline quickly in very low light. Bromeliads will do well with bright, diffused natural lighting or any type of full spectrum artificial lighting. Bromeliads are great for adding color accents to professional office space for this reason.

Interior landscapers use these flowering plants as a way to add contrast, color and texture to an interior design. Their secret to keeping them looking great, other than proper watering and good lighting, is that they are replaced on a regular basis, usually every 3 months. This depends somewhat on the bromeliad variety and the bloom stage when installed.

Once mature and in bloom, these plants will begin to fade and die after a certain amount of time as each bromeliad flowers only once. This really depends on the care they receive, the light and how far into their bloom stage they were when they were acquired. If you have a bromeliad, don't be upset if it starts to die after you have had it for awhile. This is natural. I have had some stay in good bloom for 6 months or more, although this is unusual, and most only last 2-3 months with a good looking flower. You can cut back the bloom stalk and allow your bromeliad plant to continue growing.

Bromeliads can be propagated by removing and planting the "pups" or shoots that grow from the base of a mature specimen. They should be planted into very small pots with light, well draining media. However, you must be patient as it generally takes about one and a half to two years for these plants to reach maturity and produce a bloom.

I have put pictures below of the 3 types of bromeliad plants most often used as potted house plants and in the interior landscape. There are a few thousand species of bromeliad. Pineapples are a bromeliad, Ananas comosus. The three bromeliads below are just those most often sold as interior house plants.
